Programme note
Night Music as a style or genre was invented by Bartók, notably in the fourth movement of his piano suite ‘Out of Doors’, where he conjures up the sounds of the night. The music is at once calm and eerie. The contrasting middle section summons up an ancient Xhosa bow melody played in octaves.
