I started writing this work at the same time as I was working on my cello sonata, with the idea that one of them would be recorded on Friedrich Gauwerky's CD of my cello music. As it happens the sonata won, and I only returned to this ten years later, simultaneously preparing a version for violin and piano. The title is taken from Xhosa hymn.
