Programme note
For several years I had promised Musa Nkuna a work, and the opportunity came in 2002 when the Sontonga Quartet were due to appear at the New Music Indaba that year. For the text I instructed the soloist to sing the appropriate tonic sol-fa note-names, and that meant I didn't have to write the text into the score because Nkuna had been brought up in the choral tradition in South Africa. I chose to treat the string quartet as a giant lute for the most part, a tough one for the fingers, with the bows only being picked up to play the coda.
