Programme note
Interlocking Hands explores the characteristically African music texture and rhythmic technique known as interlocking. It bears a similarity to hocketing in medieval and contemporary art music. Interlocking is central to the music of Justinian Tamusuza, Uganda's leading composer, who demonstrates it beautifully with his hands as shown in the photograph below.
