Programme note
In response to Richard Turner's request for a piece based on the evergreen Folia theme, I foraged through the repertoire and gathered about a dozen works based on that theme, from Geminiani and Marin Marais through to Rachmaninoff, and collated them on my study wall in such a way that I could trace a horizontal path through them and extract material as it suited the progress of the piece. I also introduced a traditional Xhosa bow song Latshon'ilanga and combined variations on that tune with the Folia material. Now you hear it, now you don't.
